About

Magdalena Piotrowska (Plewa) is a mastering engineer based in Poland. She first became excited by sound whilst still at kindergarten, where she dreamed of becoming a builder of musical instruments. This early enthusiasm later became the basis for her education at music school.

Her approach to mastering begins with the overall feeling and story that is to be told by the music; first beginning with the wider view and then focussing in on the finer detail. 

Magdalena is fortunate to be mentored by Grammy, Tech Awards and MPG winning UK based engineer Mandy Parnell (Bjork, Tom Jones, Aphex Twin, Sigur Ros, Manu Chao and many others). After several years of supervision and being an intern at Mandy's Black Saloon Studios, she started her own facility, Hear Candy Mastering.

Uniting her passion for sound and international travel, Magdalena participated in postgraduate studies in Music Production and Recording at the University of Stavanger in Norway as well as in the recording program at the Banff Centre for the Arts (Canada). In 2016 she received a PhD with her thesis dedicated to Music Information Retrieval. She is now involved in research making connections between science and practical applications in the field of audio technology

Magdalena has worked with artists across a diverse range of musical genres, including KARI, Further Away, Sonder, The Duffs, Ceri Jones, Laura Dickens, Claire Chase, deuair and Annalie Wilson. A production that she worked on recently as has been nominated for a Fryderyki 2016 Award.  

Magdalena is also an active member of the Audio Engineering Society, where she was Coordinator of Education&Student Events during AES Conventions in the US and Europe. She was Vice Chair of the AES Education Committee and currently serves as a Governor.

Magdalena also has experience as a band manager and has worked as a live sound and live recording engineer. She has toured around Europe with artists such as Annalie Wilson, Stina Kjelstad and QuadroSusanna.

When not in the mastering studio or the concert hall, Magdalena is a keen skier and loves to knit and cook.
